It’s been an exciting two years. Much has happened since Velo-city Global 2012 brought over 800 cycling experts to British Columbia. Cities across the Province are adopting cycling plans aimed at encouraging more people to cycle and continuing to improve cycling cycle networks with paths and separated bike lanes.

The City of North Vancouver council recently approved an all ages and abilities cycling network including separated bike lanes, paths and bikeways on residential streets. In July, Victoria adopted a five year $5 million plan to develop priority bicycle routes that is expected to include separated bike lanes. Burnaby’s plans for its town centres feature complete streets with cycle tracks. And last, but definitely not least, the City of Vancouver continues show leadership in making to make cycling safer and comfortable for everyone with projects such as the Burrard Cornwall intersection, the Seaside Greenway along Point Grey Road and upgrades to the Adanac Bikeway.

VeloWorks 2014 will build upon the legacy of Velo-city Global by highlighting these and other plans, improvements and programs from around the region and Province by bringing together political leaders, cycling experts and advocates to further move cycling forward.
To compliment these measures, groups like HUB and HASTe are working with municipalities to provide children with the skills and knowledge they need to ride safely.
Cycling Tourism is experiencing a boom across Canada and North America.  Jurisdictions around the world are working hard to attract cycling tourists and the dollars they bring to local economies.  In Oregon, for example, cycling tourism brings in over $300 million per year to the state economy.  In 2011, more than 25% of the State’s 17.4 million visitors rode a bike during their stay.  Speaking at Velo-city Global 2012 conference in Vancouver, Velo Quebec officials estimated annual spending of $134 million by cyclists using its Route Verte system.
The conference will feature experts on all aspects of cycling tourism including network development, product development, marketing, wayfinding and events. Also included will be practically advice on how the hospitality industry can cater to and attract cycling customers.
